This bonza Ashes preview podcast is a must listen.
John Etheridge, the UK Sun’s chief cricket writer joins us to chat all things England and Australia.
We debate:
- Which squad is better?
- Is Watson v Marsh the only selection issue left?
- How many English players would make a combined team?
- Is this really a “New England”?
- What role will Bayliss play?
- Best pre-series banter
- The Women’s Ashes
- Day/Night Tests
- Listener questions where someone wins a T-shirt
- The Win A Bat competition
and of course, the Scott Muller Award.

Ethridge says KP was regarded by “most senior people in the team” as a toxic influence. It’s just not true. Either Ethridge is lying or there is a long list of players who are lying.
@fred It’s most likely the 2nd one
Dennis Freedman I don’t have a problem with Etheridge repeating the ECG press release that KP was a “toxic influence” but surely it begs the question, did you investigate the claim? If you did, then tells us what you found because so far all we have is a number of players saying that didn’t have a problem with him. (Maybe they are lying – but what would they have to gain from that?) If he didn’t investigate the claim, then why not? It would be complete bullshit to say that you would like to see KP bat with Root when you haven’t bothered to investigate why KP was sacked.
Dennis Freedman so the numerous players who said KP was great and helpful are lying, and the others like Broad who said he didn’t really see a problem with KP are lying, and a journalist from the Sun is more believable?
KP was stitched up by English cricket, in a classic case of shooting itself in the foot.
I will confess that I don’t come to this with an open mind. I wouldn’t wipe my arse with the Sun, so I have trouble giving someone who works for it any credibility.
Ethridge rolled out the old line “we’re all bored with the KP story now”. Yes I agree, endless discussions about KP are boring, but the issue is, it was never about just KP. It was about the defensive, elitist and contemptuous attitude of the ECB, culminating in the way they treated him, and the total failure of the English press to examine that.
DennisCricket_ JohnSunCricket can’t argue with that lol
@fred It is important to remember that the motive to twist the story is sitting more with the ECB than with John Etheridge or any journalist.
